2-Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Safari
Best for: First-time visitors who want a relaxed pace, better acclimatization, and a proper overnight stay near the park without a long list of additional activities.
Overview
This package removes the exhausting same-day round trip from Kigali by adding one night near Volcanoes National Park, giving travelers a full rest before the physically demanding trek and time to enjoy the Musanze/Kinigi area.
Day 1: Kigali to Musanze – Arrival and Acclimatization
8:00 AM – Departure from Kigali After breakfast, depart Kigali with your driver-guide for the scenic 2.5-hour drive north to Musanze (formerly Ruhengeri), passing through terraced hillsides, tea and coffee plantations, and small trading towns.
10:30 AM – Check-in Near Volcanoes National Park Check into your lodge in the Kinigi/Musanze area. Options range from mid-range (Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge) to luxury (Bisate Lodge, Singita Kwitonda) depending on budget.
11:30 AM – Musanze Caves Excursion Visit the Musanze Caves, a network of lava tube caves formed by volcanic activity roughly 65 million years ago, now home to bat colonies and offering a guided walk of about 1–2 hours.
2:00 PM – Lunch and Free Afternoon Lunch at your lodge, followed by a relaxed afternoon to rest ahead of the next day’s trek. Some lodges offer optional cultural visits to nearby Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, where visitors can learn about traditional Rwandan life, dance, and herbal medicine practices from a former poacher-turned-conservationist community.
7:00 PM – Dinner and Early Rest Dinner at the lodge and an early night, since the trek begins with a pre-dawn wake-up.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Day
5:30 AM – Wake-up and Breakfast An early but not pre-dawn-drive breakfast, since you’re already based near the park.
6:30 AM – Transfer to Kinigi Park Headquarters A short 15–20 minute drive to the park headquarters for registration.
7:00 AM – Briefing and Group Allocation As in Package 1, rangers brief all trekkers and assign gorilla families.
8:00 AM – Trailhead Transfer and Trek Begins Depending on your assigned family, the trek can last anywhere from 1 to 5 hours round trip.
Mid-morning to Early Afternoon – One Hour with the Gorillas The unforgettable hour of observation, followed by the return hike.
1:30 PM – Lunch Return to your lodge for a late lunch and a well-earned rest, or enjoy a packed lunch at the park headquarters before departing.
3:00 PM – Departure Back to Kigali Check out and begin the return drive, arriving in Kigali by early evening.

Why This Package Works Better Than the 1-Day Option
Splitting the drive from the trek significantly reduces fatigue, increases safety margins for the trek itself, and allows travelers to enjoy Musanze’s other attractions rather than rushing straight back to Kigali exhausted.
About the Safari Packages

For a more immersive experience, we recommend spending up to three days exploring this remarkable savannah wildlife park. Nyungwe Forest, in the Southern Province, is truly one of a kind, home to over 13 species of primates, including chimpanzees.
Together, these wildlife parks combined with Volcanoes National Park make for an unforgettable, adventure-filled trip to Rwanda. Our team will craft a personalized itinerary tailored to your preferences.
